Lungs. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan through the chest of a healthy woman. The back of the body is at bottom right, the breasts are at top left. The heart (blue) is at centre. Air is breathed in through the nose or mouth into the trachea (windpipe, orange, round). This splits into the two bronchi, one for each lung (black spaces). Inside the lungs the bronchi further divide into many bronchioles (opaque branching structure in lungs). Each bronchiole becomes smaller, finally ending in alveoli (tiny air sacs, not seen). The lungs are the site of gaseous exchange; oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves.
