On 27th September 1964 a new top-secret aircraft for the Royal Air Force took to the skies over England. Designed as a long range, all weather, twin-engined supersonic bomber capable of precision flying at both high and low level flight, the aircraft was fitted with advanced avionics that could deliver a variety of weapons. As it underwent extensive testing it soon became clear that the design exceeded its original expectations - in short it was an aircraft 40 years ahead of its time.
And then it was cancelled...
Since then the name of the British Aircraft Corporation TSR.2 has become legend in the aviation world, a story of triumph and tragedy, of a project that could have been a real world beater but became a victim of politics.
The dramatic box art by John D. Jones depicts the flight to the B.A.C (former English Electric) aerodrome at Warton, near Preston, Lancashire, when chief test pilot Roland Beamont took the aircraft into supersonic flight on just one engine.
