Amateur astronomy, composite image. Silhouetted amateur astronomer awestruck by a view of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is a band of stars in the night sky that is a view of our own spiral galaxy from the inside. Our galaxy contains over 100 billion stars. These formed from clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. The next generation of stars are being born in today's nebulae, seen glowing red and shining blue among the stars of the Milky Way. Many of these nebulae will be visible through a telescope. This is a view of the Milky Way on a summer's night from the northern hemisphere, a view looking towards the centre of the galaxy.
